This is insulting and bull shit. Maybe I’m only speaking for myself, but you know why I like musicians? And this is coming from a girl who has only ever dated musicians. I like them because I am a fucking musician myself. I love music. I love it passionately, and if the person I’m seeing isn’t at least interested in music, then I won’t connect with them as deeply as I could. When some one else likes music, and plays an instrument - this goes for friends as well as love interests - we can jam together, we can talk about music, why we love it. Also, when some one is interested in music, it means I can get to know them a little in advance. I can listen to the music they like, ask them why they like it, figure them out a little bit, find some common ground to tread on.
‘Commitment’ has nothing to do with it. If it were simply about commitment, working hard at anything would do. Committing to playing an instrument is NOT THE SAME as committing to a person. Music for me has more to do with passion than commitment. Yes, you have to work at it, but it doesn’t feel like work. This post is insulting to me as a musician and as a female. It also carries the implication (also found in this delightful post) that playing an instrument means little beyond the action it can get you. Fuck that, if you play some shitty Oasis song to me so I’ll have sex with you, I’m not going to be impressed. Three chords doesn’t do it for anyone who knows a damn thing about music. Again, it’s insulting. Don’t play music to get into a girl’s pants, do it because you want to play music.
URGH.
